Cade Collum
Cade Collum

Seven new poems by Cade Collum, written with eight linoleum cuts prints in mind that were created by Cuban artist Julio César Peña Peralta. This is an English/Spanish bilingual edition, translated by Maria Vargas. 5” x 7½”, 24 pp. Red Hydra Press, 2008. Designed, letterpress-printed, and hand-bound by Steve Miller in an edition of 75 numbered copies, each signed by the author. Anna Embree has specially hard-bound the first fifteen copies. They are quarter-bound, with printed papers over boards, and a cloth spine.

This project began when, over the past four years, Alabama book artist Steve Miller, inspired by these lost animals, began photographing feral dogs he found on the streets of Havana, Cuba. Miller gave some of the photographs to Cuban artist Julio Peralta, an internationally-known artist who works at Taller Experimental de Grafica in Old Havana. Peralta took the challenge and created these remarkably evocative and pensive linoleum cuts.

In December 2006, Miller met with poet Cade Collum and showed him Peralta’s dogs. Intrigued and inspired, Collum began working on a suite of poems that would evoke the spirit of the images. Once the poems were on paper in their final form, Maria Vargas translated them into Spanish and making the book began. More meetings between printer and poet ensued, as images and words were melded together into synchronous page spreads.

Each linocut is printed in black ink infused with violet, with a different, brightly-colored background. The poems were visually shaped to complement their linocut partner. The text paper is tawny Nideggen mouldmade paper, dampened for letterpress printing. The Dogs of Havana was printed at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina while the mountain trees, visible out the studio windows, were changing into their fall colors. This book is a finely-tuned example of a high-level and slowly-developed collaboration.

Books in handmade paper wrappers are available for $250, plus $5 shipping. Specially-bound copies 1-15 are available for $475, plus $5 shipping.
